Design and Technology
Intent
At South Wootton Juniors children experience an exciting and creative Design and Technology education combining past, present and futuristic ideas to generate plans, prototypes and finished pieces. They are encouraged to review their own learning and that of others with positive, thoughtful evaluation and a problem-solving approach. DT allows our pupils to unite learning from other subjects, especially Maths, Science, Computing, Art and PSHE combining real life situations with strategic planning and analytical skills.
Implementation
We teach Design and Technology within topic learning as well as subject specific days. The National Curriculum is followed to include:
- Electrical systems and Computing
- Construction
- Sewing and Textiles
- Cooking and Nutrition
While creating, children are given a variety of materials to choose from and a design criteria to focus their beneficial outcomes. They are taught vocabulary and technical expertise by our teachers and visitors who have practical advice and real-life experience to share. Skills can be taught in whole class groups or smaller groups using a range of tools and implementation techniques.
Impact
Design and Technology in South Wootton Juniors is collected through project books or alongside learning within other areas of the curriculum. Children’s work is used together with informal child interviews, photographic and video evidence.
If you were to walk into a DT lesson you would see children with a passion for learning, helpful discussions about their skills and creations and a range of tools, materials and resources being used. They would be applying mathematical and scientific knowledge and skills accurately and managing risks well to make and produce items hygienically and safely.
